Matawan and owning it’s Water Utility

How will $36,000,000 additional DEBT affect YOU and YOUR tax or water bill?

Owning our own Water & Sewer Utility has been a controversial issue for years, and we hear you, Matawan. It’s definitely a hot topic, and no decision has been made.

Despite the popular claim that Republicans will simply come into office and sell the utility out from under the town, that is not the case. Matawan’s Future believes a decision this important should be based on facts, finances, and what best protects our residents—not politics or assumptions.

The engineering firms involved in preparing the original WIPA presentation to the NJDEP also provide ongoing services connected to the utility and could stand to lose substantial annual work if the utility were sold. That is one reason we believe any future review should take a fresh, independent look at the numbers and all potential conflicts and financial interests.

If elected, Matawan’s Future wants the opportunity to explore the options again—including keeping the utility or considering a sale—and determine what makes the most financial sense when weighing taxpayer and ratepayer costs, anticipated repairs, borrowing, and Matawan’s long-term future.

Exploring an option is not making a decision. It is doing the homework taxpayers deserve before making one.
